## Frequently Asked Questions About ADHD, Autism & AuDHD Coaching

Neurodiversity-affirming support for everyday life

Find answers about neurodiversity-affirming coaching at Supporting Sunflowers. Select a question below to read the answer, and select it again to close it.

What is neurodiversity-affirming coaching?

Neurodiversity-affirming coaching recognizes that ADHD, autism, and other forms of neurodivergence are natural variations in how people think, communicate, learn, and experience the world.

Rather than trying to make someone conform to a particular idea of "normal," coaching focuses on understanding how **you** work, identifying what gets in your way, and finding practical strategies that fit your needs, strengths, values, and circumstances.

What’s the difference between coaching and consulting?

**Consulting** is expertise-driven. You hire a consultant because they have specialized knowledge or experience that you need. They assess your situation and may provide recommendations, strategies, frameworks, or instructions for how to address it. In consulting, the professional is primarily the expert on what to do and how to do it.

**Coaching** is client-driven. A coach brings expertise in the coaching process rather than expertise in how you should live your life. Through questions, reflection, exploration, and accountability, a coach helps you clarify your goals, understand what may be getting in your way, and develop strategies that work for you. You are the expert in your own life; the coach is the expert in helping you navigate the process. You set the goals, you make the decisions, and you carry them through to completion with the clarity, focus, and efficiency that coaching can help you develop.

In simple terms: **consulting** brings you someone else's expertise; **coaching** helps you discover and apply your own. A consultant may say, “Here is what I recommend and how to implement it.” A coach is more likely to ask, “What do you want, what matters to you, and what approach will work for you?” The goal of coaching isn't to give you the coach's answer—it’s to help you develop your own.

Who is one-on-one coaching for?

One-on-one coaching is for adults who are looking for practical support with things such as ADHD, autism, executive functioning, organization, motivation, communication, life transitions, or understanding themselves better.

You don't need to have a formal diagnosis to explore coaching. If you're wondering whether neurodivergence may be affecting your life, coaching can also provide a space to explore your experiences and develop practical strategies.

The value with coaching isn't just in reaching your goals; it's in spending less of your time (time=money) and emotional budget on being stuck, going in circles, or struggling to move forward on your own.

*Coaching is not a substitute for professional diagnosis, psychotherapy, or medical care.*

What happens during a coaching session?

There isn't a one-size-fits-all session.

We'll talk about what's happening in your life, what you're hoping to accomplish, and what is getting in the way. Depending on your needs, we may work on things such as identifying patterns, developing strategies, problem-solving, improving executive functioning, preparing for difficult situations, or simply making sense of an experience.

The goal isn't for me to tell you how you *should* live. It's to work with you to find approaches that make sense for **you**.

How long is a coaching session?

Standard sessions are **up to 60 minutes**.

Shorter **30-minute sessions are also available when appropriate**. Not every conversation needs a full hour, and the length of a session can be based on what you need.

Do you offer family support?

Yes.

Family sessions are designed to help family members better understand neurodiversity and develop practical ways to communicate and support one another.

Family support may include education about ADHD or autism, communication strategies, understanding different needs and perspectives, and collaborative problem-solving.

Do I need an ADHD or autism diagnosis to work with you?

**No.**

You do not need a formal diagnosis to seek coaching. Some people come to coaching after receiving a diagnosis, while others are still trying to understand their experiences.

Coaching can help you explore your patterns, identify challenges, and develop practical strategies regardless of where you are in that process.

Who will I be working with?

Supporting Sunflowers was founded by Russell Clinton, Founder and Neurodivergent Family Coach. You Can find a full bio on the "About" page.

Is coaching confidential?

Coaching conversations are treated as private and confidential within the limits of applicable law and professional requirements. Check below for our privacy policy and terms and conditions.

Do you work with people online?

Yes. Appointments via videoconferencing are available. This allows Supporting Sunflowers to work with people who may not have access to neurodiversity-informed support where they live. Please contact us for more details.

What if I'm not sure what kind of support I need?

That's completely okay.

You don't need to figure everything out before contacting me. We can start with a conversation about what you're experiencing, what you'd like to accomplish, and what kind of support you're looking for.

From there, we can determine whether one-on-one coaching, family support, organizational services, or another resource would be the most appropriate fit.

What if I need more or less support than a typical session?

That's okay.

Coaching doesn't have to look the same for everyone. Some people may benefit from a focused 30-minute session, while others may need the full hour or ongoing sessions over a period of time.

We'll work together to find an approach that fits your needs.

Do you offer a free consultation?

Yes. A brief introductory conversation may be arranged to help us determine whether coaching is a good fit for you. This is offered as an opportunity to ask questions and discuss what you're looking for.

Can I book a single session, or do I have to commit to a package?

**Single sessions are available.**

You don't have to commit to a long-term coaching program to get started. Some people benefit from a single focused conversation, while others prefer ongoing support.

Together, we'll determine what makes sense based on your goals and circumstances.

Do you provide diagnosis or therapy?

No. Supporting Sunflowers provides **coaching, education, and practical support** rather than psychological diagnosis or psychotherapy.

If you need diagnosis, treatment for a mental-health condition, medication management, or another form of clinical care, I can help you understand what type of professional may be appropriate.

What is the difference between coaching and therapy?

**Coaching and therapy can complement each other, but they serve different purposes.**

Therapy generally focuses on mental health, emotional well-being, and addressing psychological concerns, including working through past experiences, trauma, or mental health conditions.

Coaching is generally **future-focused and practical**. It can help you better understand yourself, identify goals, work through challenges, develop strategies, and make changes that support the life you want to build.

**Coaching is not a replacement for therapy, psychological assessment, or medical treatment.** If therapy or another form of professional care would be more appropriate for your situation, I will encourage you to seek the appropriate support.

Can coaching replace therapy or medical treatment?

No.

Coaching and clinical care serve different purposes. Coaching focuses on **education, goal-setting, problem-solving, skill development, and practical strategies**.

If you're experiencing a mental-health crisis, need treatment for a mental-health condition, or have a medical concern, you should seek an appropriately qualified healthcare professional.

Do you work with organizations and businesses?
